We are based in the North-West Highlands of Scotland on the A87 route running from Invergarry and Invermoriston through to the world famous Isle of Skye. The store is just 8 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh and 9 miles from the Isle of Skye bridge. We also overlook the world famous Eilean Donan Castle - the stunning backdrop of many a film and advert! The store and the online shop operates entirely from this stunning location which is surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery found anywhere in the U.K. and with the area reading like a who's who of famous and magical places, there's little wonder that outdoor enthusiasts flock to this area from all over the world. You will also be amazed at the diverse wildlife to be readily seen in the area, including wild deer, pine martin, buzzard, porpoise, the elusive otter and even the magnificent golden and white tailed eagles.
From our well stocked shop on the shores of Loch Alsh, we're only 10 minutes by road from Glen Shiel/Kintail, 40 minutes from the Cuillin Ridge, an hour from Torridon and Knoydart and within easy reach of Glen Affric. Click here to see our setting via our world famous mountain/castle webcam.
Founded in May 2005, by modern day terms we may be a small shop, but we pride ourselves on packing a punch! To help us do this, we are staffed by a team of true outdoor enthusiasts with a varied array of experience and knowledge that allows us to hand pick gear that works in our challenging climate. Because you will be talking to real people and experienced users of what 9-1-4 has to offer and not a call centre or warehouse filled with inexperienced sales assistants, we will be only too happy to help and advise.
Patrick - 9-1-4 Outdoor Founder
Experience: Over 20 years walking, scrambling and backpacking across the hills and mountains of the UK. Patrick has extensive knowledge of the local area and in recent years has scaled scores of individual Munros ....many of which more than once and in full winter conditions. He has also been known to climb indoors (and outdoors at a push) with his usual 'finesse' but only when he can find someone heavy and brave enough to belay him! Pat is currently working towards his Summer ML assessment.
Favourite Days: The Inaccessible Pinnacle and generally 'playing' on the Cuillin Ridge on Skye.
Notable Trips: Completing the 95 mile West Highland Way in a 'not-too-shabby-for-an-old-guy' 6 days, carrying everything but a tent.
Paul - Supervisor
Experience: Over 10 years experience in the outdoors. Having cut his teeth on Dartmoor, he's gone on to explore some of the wilder regions of Europe, including Southern Norway, the Tatras of Poland and Slovakia, the Carpathians of Romania and the Julian Alps of Slovenia. On top of this Paul is also a keen mountain biker, sea kayaker and climber.
Favourite Days: Blaven via the Clach Glas Traverse.
Notable Trips: In 2006, Paul completed a solo unsupported trip across Southern Norway, trekking from Oslo to Trondheim, a route which covered 640km in 30 days. In 2007 he crossed the 70km long Fagaras Ridge in Romania. And in 2009 he kayaked the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness along the 100km long Caledonian Canal.
Shona - Advisor
Experience: With Highland crofting roots, Shona has been a keen hillwalker and wild camper from a very young age, covering most of the north and west of Scotland. Being a keen photographer sees Shona wandering the hills and glens in search of landscapes, wildlife and all the other beautiful sights the Highlands have to offer! Shona is also currently dabbling with kayaking and climbing.
Favourite Days: Solo camping near Applecross.
Notable Trips: Backpacking from Glen Affric to Morvich and climbing Ben Wyvis.
Ritchie - Advisor
Experience: Ritchie has been hillwalking, summer and winter climbing in the Scottish mountains for the past 15 years. He has also climbed in the French Alps and ice climbed in Canada. For the past 10 years Ritchie has been a member of the Kintail Mountain Rescue Team; the last two as their training officer. Ritchie is also a very keen caver with extensive knowledge of the local cave networks. Ritchie is currently working towards his Summer ML assessment.
Favourite Days: Climbing in the Cuillins, Applecross and Diabeg.
Notable Trips: The French Alps, including many peaks around the Chamonix valley and ice climbing in Canada.
Ollie - Collie (No relation to Norman Collie - Mountaineering legend)
Experience: Some say he once tried to eat a complete sea kayak and that due to a mix up at birth he's not in control of his own legs. All we know is they call him the BEAST!
Favourite Days: Chasing wind blown leaves and rolling in what he shouldn't.
Notable Trips: The Five Sisters & scrambling on the southern Cuillin.
